RORO: World’s Largest Car Carrier Embarks On Maiden Voyage From China

The world’s largest car carrier has left a yard in China on its maiden voyage to Brazil.

The vessel is identified as BYD Shenzhen and the manufacturers, BYD’s investment in this fleet aims to boost its global new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, shorten transportation cycles, reduce logistics costs, and support its expansion into over 100 countries and 400 cities worldwide.

The 9,200 Car Equivalent Units CEUs BYD Shenzhen pips Höegh Autoliners’ Aurora class series by 100 cars in terms of capacity, and becomes the fourth vessel in Chinese auto manufacturer BYD’s growing fleet with another two ships set to start trading soon.

The 219 m long, LNG dual-fuel powered ship was constructed by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard.

While BYD Shenzhen currently holds the largest capacity title, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is set to launch even larger carriers (9,300 CEU capacity) next year, which may surpass BYD’s record.
