NPA Intensifies  24-Hour Port Operations To Boost Nigeria’s Trade Competitiveness

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is ramping up efforts to modernize and expand 24-hour operations at the nation’s seaports, aiming to align with international best practices and strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in global maritime trade.

Key port services—including pilotage, marine operations, vessel traffic management, and exit gate access—are already running round-the-clock at major hubs like the Lagos Ports Complex and Tin Can Island Port.

These continuous operations are supported by rotational shifts for pilots and marine crews, as well as the use of digital systems such as automated billing and the Eto electronic call-up system, which streamlines truck scheduling and cargo movement.

Speaking at the JournalNg fifth port industry town hall meeting , held in Lagos on Thursday, Managing Director NPA , Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho said it is also moving forward with the implementation of a Port Community System (PCS), a unified digital platform designed to integrate all port stakeholders for seamless data exchange and real-time process visibility, saying that when fully deployed, the PCS is expected to further enhance 24-hour operational efficiency.
Addressing Security and Infrastructure gaps.

Dantsoho who was represented by Port Manager, Lagos Ports Complex (LPC),Lawal Ibrahim, stated that NPA is moving forward with the implementation of a Port Community System (PCS), a unified digital platform designed to integrate all port stakeholders for seamless data exchange and real-time process visibility, saying that when fully deployed, the PCS is expected to further enhance 24-hour operational efficiency.

According to him, despite progress, full 24-hour operations across all Nigerian ports remain challenged by security concerns, especially at night, and the need for improved infrastructure such as adequate lighting at critical access points.

“The NPA is working closely with the Nigerian Navy, NIMASA, and the police to strengthen maritime security and ensure safe movement for port officials and truckers.”

Adding that”Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) plays a pivotal role in facilitating Maritime Trade in Nigeria. To align with international best practices and improve national competitiveness, NPA has continuously made efforts to ensure its operations are efficient, responsive, and technology-driven. ”

Earlier , Publisher of Journal Ng, Mallam Ismail Aniemu stressed the need for the Nigeria seaports to be functional on 24 hours basis .

Aniemu stated that the nation’s seaports can become the hub of shipping activities in the sub region if government is committed to infrastructure development.
