Kebbi Govt Spends N 673m On Birnin Kebbi Water Project

As part of efforts to increase water supply  capacity, as well as bring to an end, recurring water scarcity in Birnin Kebbi, the State capital, the Kebbi State Government has completed the rehabilitation of the Bi-Water Scheme in the city with a whopping N673million.

 

 

According to a statement signed by Yahaya Sarki (SA) Media to Kebbi State Governor, on Thursday, this was disclosed by the Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Nura Usman Kangiwa, in Birnin Kebbi, shortly after conducting newsmen round three Water Works being refurbished by the incumbent administration of Governor Atiku Bagudu.

 

He explained that, the Governor had signed an Expression of interest Agreement that paved the way for the tripartite financing of replacement of old facilities with new ones at the gigantic Dukku water project, worth Six hundred and Seventy-Three million naira by the World Bank, the Federal Government and Kebbi state Government.

 

 

Nura Kangiwa also added that the Dukku Water Works would be completed by the end of this month, averring that, it would further increase water supply to the state capital, including its environs like Bayan Kara.

 

He added that, the Old Water Works, Birnin Kebbi, constructed by the late Premier of Northern Region, Sardauna of Sokoto, had also been rehabilitated, to enhance its function.

 

The General Manager of the State Water Board, Engineer Zayyanu Shehu,also told Journalists that, several boreholes had been sunk, with massive reservoirs storing water as back-up and for emergency purposes.

 

This, he happily noted, was an antidote to the global warming that may likely force dams and lakes supplying water to the Water Works, to dry up.

 

The Commissioner was accompanied on the inspection visit by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources, Ya’aqubu Bala Tafida .
