LASG Directs Scavengers to Vacate Dumpsites

In furtherance of measures introduced to curb the spread of the Coronavirus, (COVID-19), the Lagos State Government has directed scavengers to immediately vacate all refuse dumpsites.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to give immediate effect to the directive.

The Commissioner added that under no circumstance should anyone be allowed to continue scavenging on the various dumpsites in the State, insisting that LAWMA must ensure PSP operators are only allowed on dumpsites to discharge refuse and depart immediately.

He appealed to Chairmen of Local Government Councils and Development Authorities to assist the State Government by ensuring that needless gathering of people on the streets and suburbs, including street traders, is prevented henceforth.

While highlighting the importance of Local Government helmsmen in the prevention of the spread of the virus, Bello urged the Chairmen to take proactive measures by preventing a large gathering of people at gaming and betting centres within their localities at any point in time.
