LASBCA Dismisses Keystone Bank Building Collapse

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has debunked  news report  on social media platforms alleging that a building collapsed in the State.

A statement issued by the General Manager, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe on Saturday, countered that claim, stressing that it was a collapsed canopy that claimed the life of an artisan during the renovation of a building occupied by Keystone Bank on Ikorodu Road, Palmgrove Bus Stop, Lagos.

Engr. Kosegbe explained that a three-floor structure was undergoing renovation when the canopy caved in during installation.

He added that the canopy, an addition to the already standing structure, came down when the weight of the column could not be sustained by the support provided .

While noting that the renovation of the building was initially flagged by a team of LASBCA Monitoring Officers, Kosegbe said it was later discovered that owners of the building obtained the necessary permit for the ongoing works.

The Agency boss stated that there will be a continuous inspection of buildings renovation across the State to ensure that owners/developers adhere strictly to the approvals granted as well as code of construction practice and regulations.

Kosegbe further emphasised that the incident could not be considered as a building collapse, but a fatal accident on a building site, since it was an attachment to an already standing structure that gave way in the course of installation.

He advised workers on construction sites to always observe safety precautions to protect themselves during building construction.
