At least 150 suspected bandits with their arms and ammunition have drowned sequel to boat mishap in the Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State on Saturday evening.
Local sources reported to Zagazola Makamai that the armed group was crossing a river in large numbers when the overloaded boat overturned, with many unable to swim contributing to the high death toll.
No survivors have been confirmed, and security authorities have yet to issue an official statement, though the event could weaken criminal operations in Northwestern Nigeria if verified.
Sources said the incident occurred on Saturday evening when the boat, carrying numerous armed bandits, overturned while attempting to cross a local river.
According to the sources, the bandits were traveling in large numbers when the boat unexpectedly capsized, throwing all passengers into the water.
“Early reports suggest that many of them could not swim, which contributed to the high death toll,” one source revealed.
Initial reports indicate that no passengers survived, although security authorities have not yet issued an official statement as of this report.
