MAY DAY: SSASCFA Tasks Employers In Shipping Industry To Prioritize Talents Over Technology, Machinery

The Senior Staff Association of Shipping and Clearing and Forwarding Agencies (SSASCFA) has called on employers of labour in the industry to prioritize talents of workers against technology or machinery..

President General of SSASCFA,Comrade Harrison Ugochukwu Asonye made the plea in a statement on Wednesday,May 1 2024 to commemorate the 2024 Workers Day celebration,.

Asonye emphasized the need for employers in the shipping sub sector of the Maritime industry to look inward by ensuring that workers demands are taken serious noting that the union will continue to engage management constructively for improved workers welfare.

The President General further called on leaders and stakeholders, to place the needs and interests of the people at the forefront of policy decisions and actions.

According to him, the year’s theme “People First” was chosen by the 2024 Joint Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) May Day Committee, adding that the theme focused on the importance of ensuring the welfare of the people is at the forefront of policy decisions and actions.

He noted that “I am deeply honoured to address you all on this significant occasion. This year’s workers day celebration theme is “People First”, which resonates profoundly with the core values and principles that guide our association. It underscores the imperative of prioritizing the welfare and well-being of our people in all aspects of our endeavours.

 

“More also in our industry, which is inherently dynamic and multifaceted, it is easy to become engrossed in the intricacies of logistics, regulations, and operations. However, amidst the hustle and bustle of our daily activities, we must never lose sight of the fact that it is the dedicated efforts and unwavering commitment of our people that drive our success.

“The theme “People First” serves as a poignant reminder that our greatest asset lies not in the machinery or technology we employ, but in the talents, skills, and aspirations of our workforce.”

He further reiterated that unions commitment towards championing initiatives that prioritize the well-being and advancement of members which according to him, includes advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for professional development and growth, thus it also entails fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and mutual respect within our ranks.

“Furthermore, we must recognize that our responsibility extends beyond the confines of our association and our industry. We are integral members of the broader labour community, and as such, we must stand in solidarity with our fellow workers in advocating for their rights and dignity.

” Together, we can amplify our voices and effect meaningful change that benefits all workers, not just within our industry, but across sectors and industries.

“In the spirit of “People First”, let us recommit ourselves to building a workplace environment where every individual feels valued, empowered, and supported. Let us strive to cultivate a culture of empathy, compassion, and collaboration that fosters the personal and professional growth of all our members.
