18 YRS SALARY STAGNATION : MWUN Ready For Show Down With NPA 

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria on Tuesday, expressed dissatisfaction over eighteen years stagnancy  salary structure of workers , even as it has issued  a strong warning to management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to review the salary structure and increase staff welfare.

It was gathered that since 2004 to date, the basic salary of  junior workers of NPA (Level 5 to 8) receives between 20 ,000 and 27,000 respectively.

 

DAILY FOCUS NIGERIA also learnt that members at Onne Port MWUN have started grumbling and giving the union ultimatum, or else they are ready to laws into their own hands over the salary stagnancy.

Speaking at a meeting with Branch Executives , NPA, President General MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju frowned at the delay on salary increase of the workers, noting that renumeration of workers is a right that must be met by management of the NPA.

Adeyanju disclosed that he was informed on the 1st October 2022 about the discouraging salary structure of NPA workers  by management but noted that the right of the workers cannot be mortgage by some few individuals in Nigeria.

The President General who expressed dissatisfaction over the  silence that have existed among the branch executive for a long while noted that it is a critical issue that must be addressed squarely adding that this is a clear violation of all labour practices and as an affront to what the Maritime Workers Union

Comrade Adeyanju vowed to issue queries to President of the NPA Branch of the Union, his executives and other top level members of the union who failed to intimate him on the subject matter.

He said the union will take up the responsibilities to ensure that all salaries involving the workers are resolved, over the ill-treatment by management of NPA for eighteen years.

“I never knew about this anomaly because your branch president was keeping this silent from me. This matter came to my notice on October 1st when some senior members of NPA came to my house to inform me.

“We have supported this management enough, it is now time for them to reward Us back by paying our members properly”

Comrade Adeyanju lauded recent steps taken by NPA management on harmonisation of salaries, as well as plans to grant housing grants to workers, but frowned at peanut being given as salaries.

The union announced that it has written to the Managing Director of the NPA, Muhammed Bello-Koko on 27th of October, drawing his attention to the concerns.

“All is not well in the NPA, the workers are not being treated well, their salaries are poor, there is stagnation in workers promotion, and we are ready to go all the way with NPA management, we would even shutdown the ports” Comrade Adeyanju threatened.

 

Deputy President General MWUN, Comrade Harry Tonye lamented that junior staff will soon go extinction.

Earlier President NPA Branch, MWUN, Comrade Ifeanyi Mazeli highlighted the numerous challenges befalling the workers under NPA.
